Stretch Satin: the fabric that finally combines glamour and comfort

You know the feeling: you put on a beautiful satin dress for a party and after two hours you’re standing in the corner because you can barely breathe. Or worse — you bend down to pick up a fallen earring and hear exactly that sound you never want to hear. Woven satin is beautiful, but it forgives nothing. Stretch satin does. And once you know what you can make with it, you’ll never want to go back.

What exactly is double-sided stretch satin?

Stretch satin is satin fabric with a twist — literally. By adding a small percentage of elastane to the polyester fibres, the fabric gains stretch in all directions. That may sound technical, but you feel the result immediately: the fabric moves with you, does not pull tight in the wrong places and drapes smoothly around every body shape.

But our version goes one step further: it is double-sided — also known as Double Face. This means both sides of the fabric have a glossy, finished satin surface. No “right” and “wrong” side. No visible inside you would rather hide. Just two sides that both look fantastic.

The composition? 97% polyester, 3% elastane. With a weight of 160 grams per m², the fabric has enough body to drape beautifully, without being so heavy that a dress feels like a curtain. The width of 150cm gives you plenty of fabric for most clothing projects.

What can you make with stretch satin?

More than you might think. Satin quickly brings to mind red carpets and gala dinners, but this fabric is more versatile than its reputation suggests.

Eveningwear and occasionwear

This is, of course, where stretch satin truly shines — in the most literal sense of the word. A beautifully draped evening dress, a fitted gala dress or an elegant jumpsuit: the glossy surface reflects light beautifully and gives every garment instant allure. And thanks to the stretch, it also stays comfortable all evening long.

Bridalwear and festive clothing

Stretch satin is a popular choice for bridalwear — and not only for the bride herself. Bridesmaid dresses, boleros, sashes and decorative satin details give a wedding that luxurious, cohesive look. The stretch also makes it easier to create close-fitting silhouettes without the fabric pulling or wrinkling.

Blouses and skirts for everyday wear

Satin really does not have to be reserved for special occasions. A loose satin blouse over jeans, a flowing midi skirt for work — it all works. The stretch makes it practically wearable too, not just photogenic.

Stagewear and dancewear

For dancers, actors and performers, stretch satin is a classic choice. The fabric moves with every gesture, reflects stage lighting beautifully and looks just as good from a distance as it does up close. The double-sided finish is an extra advantage for costumes where the inside may become visible during movement.

Lingerie and nightwear

Soft, glossy and stretchy — stretch satin is ideal for lingerie sets, negligées and luxury nightwear. The fabric feels pleasant against the skin and has that distinctive luxurious look that cheaper alternatives never quite manage to match.

Reversible garments

This is where the Double Face character really proves its value. Because both sides of the fabric are finished, you can create garments that can be turned inside out — two looks, one piece. Think of a reversible cape, a reversible skirt or a jacket that can be worn glossy or matte, depending on which side you choose.

The colours: from timeless to bold

Our double-sided stretch satin is available in an extensive palette of 16 colours — and that is intentional. Because for a fabric this versatile, a limited colour range simply would not do.

On one side of the spectrum you will find the timeless shades: black, white, cream and off-white. Colours that always work, always look good and can be combined effortlessly with other fabrics and materials. On the other side, a world of rich, deep tones awaits: dark green, burgundy, navy, purple and lilac for those who want to make a statement. And then there are the romantic and warm colours: light pink, cocoa and golden yellow for projects where softness and warmth take centre stage.

Can’t choose? We understand. Order a sample or a small quantity of several colours — the fabric speaks for itself once you have it in your hands.

Working with stretch satin: what you need to know

Satin has a reputation as a “difficult” fabric. Partly fair — but with the right approach it is really manageable. And the double-sided stretch version is, thanks to the elastane, actually much more forgiving than regular woven satin.

Cutting

This is where most beginner satin sewists struggle. Satin is smooth and shifts incredibly quickly. Our tips:

  • Lay the fabric flat on a cutting mat — never on a slippery tabletop
  • Use sharp scissors or a rotary cutter and replace the blade regularly
  • Use enough pins or dressmaking pins to keep the fabric in place
  • Preferably cut in one smooth movement — chopping and trimming creates frayed edges
  • If needed, place an anti-slip layer underneath the fabric for extra grip

Sewing

Use a stretch or jersey needle size 75–90 and fine polyester thread. Sew with a small straight stitch or a light zigzag stitch to preserve the stretch in the fabric. The most important advice: always test on a scrap piece first. Satin is sensitive to needle holes that can remain visible even after sewing — a hole in the wrong place cannot be repaired.

Ironing

Always use a low temperature and never iron directly on the glossy side. Use a pressing cloth or iron inside out. High temperatures damage the polyester fibres and permanently affect the sheen — and that would be a shame after all your work.

Washing: how do you keep satin beautiful?

Good news: stretch satin is easier to care for than its luxurious appearance suggests. No dry cleaning needed, no complicated rituals.

  • Wash at a maximum of 30°C using a delicate or hand-wash programme
  • Use a mild detergent — no aggressive products or bleach
  • Do not tumble dry — let the fabric air dry
  • Preferably wash inside out to protect the glossy surface
  • Pre-washing before processing is recommended — allow for approximately 2–4% shrinkage during the first wash

In short: treat it the way you would like to be treated after a long evening in a beautiful outfit. Gently, carefully and with respect for the details.

Double-sided: two looks, one fabric

We touched on it earlier, but the Double Face character of this fabric deserves its own moment in the spotlight. Because it is not just a technical detail — it is a creative opportunity that most fabrics simply do not offer.

Because both sides have a finished satin sheen, you can leave seams and edges on the inside uncovered without it looking messy. This makes the fabric ideal for:

  • Unlined dresses and skirts — no lining needed, the inside still looks neat
  • Reversible designs — turn it around and you have a completely different look
  • Capes and coats where the inside is visible
  • Decorative details such as bows, sashes and bands where both sides are visible
